Why Trying for Less Will Get You More

Why Trying for Less Will Get You More Why Trying for Less Will Get You More Can narrowing down your job search focus actually get you more interviews than trying for a wide range of jobs? Thats been my experience.First let me give you a geschftliches miteinander example, and then Ill tell you about a client of mine who got amazing results just by narrowing zu sich sights. When we worked with the amazing Squared Eye to redesign our website earlier this year, we made a big decision we would clearly define our target audience for the first time. We wouldnt try to attract everyone. We would design a site and write copy that would appeal to creative and technology professionals. It welches a little scary after all, 50% of our clients were neither creative nor technical. Were we going to lose them? If we did, would we find enough extra clients to make up for it?Six months later and the results are in. We now attract far more of the clients who fit neatly into our target audience. But we al so attract just as many people who dont Were still writing great resumes for senior operations executives and administrative assistants and accountants. It turns out that by narrowing our focus, we attracted a wider variety of people.I was thinking about this over the weekend, because as this awful recession drags on, Ive seen an increase in people who are widening their search out of desperation. They say things like Ive been a programmer for the last 6 years but I used to work in retail. Can you write me a resume that would work for both? Or I dont care what kind of job I get. I just need a job. When I say that no, we really cant write an effective resume without a clear focus, I know some of these people get very nervous. If they narrow down their search when jobs are so scarce, wont they just increase the chances that theyll stay unemployed forever?I know its scary, just as it was scary for us when we decided to narrow our business focus. But trust me when I tell you Narrowing yo ur focus will ensure that you are more successful, not less. A real life example Let me give you a recent example. A client of mine had some past experience in not-for-profit marketing and more recent experience in for profit graphic design. Her background looked a little scattered on paper, and her focus was just as scattered. She was applying for marketing jobs in both non-profit and corporate environments. When she didnt get interviews, she also started applying for graphic design jobs in both types of organization. To make matters worse, she was trying to relocate from a rural area in the South to an urban center in the North East, and she needed to get a job prior to making the move. When we sat down and talked, it became clear that she really wanted to do marketing for a non-profit. She hadnt enjoyed her time in the corporate world and was much happier when her work was making a difference in the world. Once we had this defined, I rewrote her resume to focus like a laser on thi s target. We emphasized her passion for non-profit work, in part by showing all the volunteer work she had been doing, we detailed her past experience in the field, and we stressed her combination of marketing and design experience a huge plus for cash-strapped non-profits.The results were better than even I could have imagined. Within a few weeks of looking, my client wrote and told me she had lined up 3 interviews for an upcoming trip to her target city. And she had only sent 4 resumes I havent heard yet whether she got any of the jobs, but the difference in results is astounding she went from no responses, to getting 3 out of the 4 interviews she tried for.If you have been unemployed for a while and are not getting responses, you have nothing to lose by trying my advice. Pick a target, hone in on it, write every word of your resume to appeal to those companies, and target all your networking efforts on getting to know people in that field. Forget all the other possibilities and just FOCUSIf you do it right, you will see results.

7 HOT TIPS FOR GETTING PROMOTED IN THE GOVERNMENT

7 HOT TIPS FOR GETTING PROMOTED IN THE GOVERNMENT7 HOT TIPS FOR GETTING PROMOTED IN THE GOVERNMENT7 HOT TIPS FOR GETTING PROMOTED IN THE GOVERNMENTFACT The average federal grade level is GS-12. The Office of Personnel Managements (OPM) FY 2013 profile of full time, permanent federal civilian non-postal employees showed the average annual salary to be approximately $79,000.The RealityOpportunities for promotion in government are plentiful, but it takes a strategy to develop your skills and prepare your resume in buchung to get promoted to the next grade level. As your grade level increases, so does the required level of qualification and responsibility.Advancement from higher-level grades is more competitive.Opportunities are more difficult to obtain, parteicularly outside of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.If your resume does not represent skills for the next higher grade level, you will not get promoted. The Good News Federal employees (many in higher-grade positions) are incre asingly becoming retirement-eligible. That may help you advance to a higher grade more quickly these days than in the past.7 HOP TIPS Put these tips to work now and increase the likelihood of moving up in the Federal Government.DEVELOP A GAME PLAN. Rather than applying for every new Announcement at the next highest grade, step back and assess your own strengths, where the opportunities are to best utilize those skills, and where you will enjoy working. Focus on those Job Announcements first and integrate the next 6 TIPS in your analysis.MOVING UP within the saatkorn series is generally easier than moving between series. This is particularly the case as you approach the mid-level grades. Your series experience, especially if its in the same agency, should be directly relevant to the skills required in the next graded position. Those skills may also translate well to same series positions in other agencies, but the applicant pool will likely include more candidates with agency-specifi c knowledge and experience. This is also the case, to a somewhat lesser extent, with moving within the same occupational group (for example, the 0340 General Administrative group that includes occupational series for e.g., Program Managers, Administrative Officers, Management and Program Analysts, and Logistics Managers). It will be more challenging to meet the specialized experience criteria for different series unless you have expertise in the other skills sets.LOOK FOR multi-grade career ladder positions. In these positions, employees progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full wertmiger zuwachs level. You will not be competing against others for a promotion to the next grade, but rather against performance expectations. If you had originally been selected to a GS-12 position with promotion potential of a GS-14, you could have moved up to a GS-14 in as little as two years if you performed well. So, try to identify positions where you have noncompetitive opportunities to move up. As you might expect, these ladder opportunities are harder to find as you get into the mid and higher-level grades.SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE Always excel. Do your best and achieve in tangible ways. Produce qualitative work of significant impact that is praised by superiors exceed the quantitative expectations of your position. If your Agency awards superior work, do your best to be acknowledged with letters of commendation, incentive and special achievement awards (both individual and as a member of winning teams), and quality step increases. Be the first to volunteer for the challenging assignment and help your management team succeed.ACTIVELY PURSUE career-enhancing opportunities. Review the type of skills that are expected at the next grade level of your series and look for ways to gain those skills. Seek out assignments to be part of special teams or task forces apply for meaningful details look for opportunities to act at the next level. Offer to mentor new staff or interns. Be an effective change agent and embrace reinvention at your agency. Pursue in-house or other government agency training that may help you in your current and future positions you may be pleasantly surprised at the training opportunities that are there for the asking. And, remember that relevant volunteer work, although unpaid, helps build your competencies. You will be credited for all of your qualifying experience, including volunteer experience that you clearly include on your Federal Resume.TIMING Dont stay in a job for too long before trying to move up. Once you have a few years of experience under your belt, start looking for opportunities at the next grade level. Even if you dont succeed at first, establishing your interest in upward mobility sends an important message to your management team. If you find your current agencys environment stimulating and there are opportunities to grow, explore those first. If not, should familiarize yourself with the missio ns and goals of other agencies (perhaps those where his skills could best be utilized) and apply for opportunities in those agencies. A great source for learning about specific agencies is to review The Partnership for Public Services annual Best Places to Work in the Federal Government. Another tool proving valuable insight into agency challenges is OPMs Annual Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey.NETWORK, NETWORK, and NETWORK. Join professional organizations, alumni associations, and relevant LinkedIn groups. Make koranvers that you have a professional social networking presence. Attend luncheons, etc. where you are likely to learn and mingle. If appropriate, seek informational interviews with managers in prospective offices. If you need help with a federal resume for a promotion or first time government job, contact the Resume Place for a free quote by filling out the Request Quote for Federal Resume.

5 Sophisticated Job Scams to Watch out For

5 Sophisticated Job Scams to Watch out For5 Sophisticated Job Scams to Watch out ForAccording to the most recent U.S. Census Bureau report, each year mora and more Americans are seeking out flexible work. In the past 10 years, work-from-home job opportunities have risen over 40 percent. However, with this increase in flexible work, also comes an overwhelming rise in the number of job scams for this niche job market.Of course there are the typical job scams such as unsolicited emails offering jobs, jobs that require you to invest large sums of money to be hired, and those that advertise with the obviously off-putting $$$ and punctuation. Yet, with an increase in technology use, scammers are becoming more elusive by the day.In order to help you stay on your toes about job search scams, below are five sophisticated job scams and how to spot and avoid them.1. Scammers using fake URLsThe scam You come across an online job listing from a well-known company such as CNBC or General Electric, offering work-from-home jobs. It is too good to be true? Is the company really the company it claims to be?How to detect the scam First start by checking the web address of the company. You may find that scammers have recreated the original companys website by slightly altering the web address. An example of a recent fake CNBC website is http//cnbc-inc.com. Though it gives the impression you are on a page within the CNBC site, the -inc.com shows it has nothing to do with the real CNBC website.General Electric has a page on their REAL website that helps people learn about and detect this type of fraud. Says GE, GE takes this matter seriously, and is working closely with the appropriate authorities to effectively address the issue. By making you aware of this, we hope to avoid, and ultimately prevent, unsuspecting individuals from falling victim to this scam. UnitedHealth Group wrote a blog post on their real website on the topic of job scams, as well, alerting job seekers to the fac t that their name welches being used in scam job postings.Another way to double check a potentially fraudulent website is to open up a new browser and run an Internet search on the company. Make your way to the company career page, and compare your potentially false job listing to the open positions on the real company website.2. Scammers gaining access to personal banking informationThe Scam This could be the oldest and most well-known scam tactic in the books. Even the most tech-savvy job scammers use this method because they still work. So much so, that the Federal Trade Commission recently had to refund over $2 million to over 90,000 individuals who were subject to an extensive work-at-home scam. According to the FTC, The online work-at-home operation, which operated under the names Google Money Tree, Google Pro, and Google Treasure Chest, deceptively used Googles name and logo. The operation promised that consumers could earn $100,000 in six months after signing up to receive a work-at-home kit for a shipping fee of under $4. The operation didnt tell consumers that, by ordering the work-at-home kit, they were disclosing their account information and would be charged an additional $72.21 each month. How to detect the scam If youve been offered a large amount of money for a small investment, have been requested to immediately share bank account information, or promised a quick-fix kit to all your work-at-home search troubles, this is very likely an example of an Internet job scam, with its use of scam tactics that have been used for decades in newspaper and magazine ads..3. Scammers prowling on LinkedInThe scam Unfortunately, no job seeking site seems to be immune to scammers, even one with as solid a reputation as LinkedIn. We recently heard from a member of our LinkedIn group about an unfortunate experience she had when dealing with a job offer she received through LinkedIn. The job seeker says, I gave up a work-at-home position with a reliable paycheck be cause I was contacted by someone through my LinkedIn profile. The company offered me a much better paying position and requested I leave my current position and start there the following week. I did as they requested. I worked for them for 2 weeks and 2 daysand then out of nowhere they said they decided to go in a different direction and let me go. They NEVER paid me- they owe me over $1,000 and wont respond to my calls or emails. To make matters worse, this job seekers old company, a reputable geschftsleben that allowed her to work from home, wont re-hire her because she failed to provide two weeks notice when she originally left the job.How to detect the scam In this day and age, being unexpectedly contacted by a company that is interested in interviewing you is not unheard of. However, being offered a job by a company that you have never interviewed at or had any interaction with is a red flag. If there is a sense of urgency, such as asking you to leave your current job immediatel y without allowing you to give your two weeks notice is another sure sign of a scam. Scammers have become incredibly tuned into the fact that some job seekers are desperate to make more money, and they will use this in recruiting new professionals. Scammers recognize that applying a time limit, paired with an increase in pay, may make it difficult for professionals to look at the job from a logical and rational standpoint. If you feel like you might be dealing with a job scam but need confirmation, email feedback .com or post the job to the LinkedIn group for discussion. Were happy to tell you whether the job and company would pass our rigorous screening.4. Scammers communicating through instant messengerThe scam Scammers have started turning to instant messaging services, such as Yahoo Messenger and Google, to communicate and conduct fake job interviewers with job seekers. How to detect the scam Although convenient, it is rare to actually secure a job or conduct a job interview with a legitimate company through instant messenger. If you are approached through instant messenger, be sure to request that they give you a call, and do your research before interviewing to see if the results yield any red flags. As you can see from this actual transcript of an IM chat between a scammer and a job seeker, the scammers English language skills are often lacking, they offer unnecessary details like their age, they use lots of and ?? punctuation, and they are able to provide the job seeker with a hiring decision immediately. They then ask for $369 for software programs and require payment via Western Union, another huge red flag for job scams.5. Lack of verifiable contact informationThe Scam You find a great work-at-home job with what appears to be a legitimate company and website. However, the only available information on the contact page is a standard inquiry submission form. How to detect the scam If you cant verify either the owner, address, or phone number for the comp any at hand, there is a good chance that it is involved in a job scam of some sort. Be sure to conduct your own thorough research outside of the company webpage to determine if the business is legitimate. If you feel like you might be dealing with a job scam but need confirmation, email feedback .com or post the job to the LinkedIn groupfor discussion. Were happy to tell you whether the job and company would pass our rigorous screening.Readers, what steps do you take to avoid job scams and stay safe in a job search?

Make your own rules for life We all need a personal philosophy

Make your own rules for life We all need a partieal philosophyMake your own rules for life We all need a personal philosophyWhat do you want out of life? Do you know?A lot of people have trouble answering this question.Seneca once said, Most powerful is he who has himself in his own power. Are you in control of your life?We all need personal philosophy in life or we risk wandering, and responding to random stimuli and information with little or no impact on our long-term goals.A philosophy of life is an overall vision or attitude toward life and the purpose of it.Human activities are limited by time, and death. But we forget this.We fill up our time with distractions, never asking whether they are important, whether we really find them of value. You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think says Marcus Aurelius.Without a personal philosophy, we end up living without direction.A few simple rules that shape and guide my lifeThe meaning of life is the mea ning you decide to give it.Life is about solving problems, and every obstacle is the way forward. You are the author of your own life.Make improvements, elend excuses.Life is short. Do what brings out the best in you.Question your assumptions at all times.Effort matters more than skill or talent. It pays to create your own certainty.Youll be happier if you focus on efforts and attention only on the things in your control. The idea of a life philosophy, comes back to a central question, one that Mary Oliver asks well What will you do with your one wild and precious life?Living without purpose is dangerousNothing gives a person inner wholeness and peace like a distinct understanding of where they are going.Until you settle on a purpose, your life is in danger of having little meaning except for self-gratification.Robert Bryne once observed, The purpose of life is a life of purpose. In order to get somewhere, you need to define your end goal. That is essential. And the sooner you define it , the clearer everything else will become. A life without a purpose is a life without a destination.Finding the right direction in life is an existential problem for all of us.Life must be understood backward. But it must be lived forward, said Sren Kierkegaard. What do you look forward to in life?Fyodor Dostoyevsky once said, The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.Finding the right direction in life is something you create. You make the decision to act. To try. To do something. No matter how small. At some point in life, youre going to have to stop thinking about taking action and act.Your purpose in life is to find and do the things that make you smile, laugh and forget time. Even if you arent sure yet, move into the exploration and experimentation phase of your life and enjoy the journey. You cant put time on it. You cant force yourself to find your why tomorrow or next month, or even next year. But by all means, search fo r clarity. In the 1940s, Viktor E. Frankl, was held prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. With all the agony and brutality, what kept Frankl from giving up his relentless fight for his life was purposeHe found meaning in his struggle, and thats what gave him the power to push forward through unimaginable pain.A quote by Viktor nicely sums up his philosophy on how people were able to survive the camps, without losing the will to live.In his book, Mans Search for Meaning, Viktor says Those who have a why to live, can bear with almost any how.Once you have defined your aims and what you want, it is easier to deal with doubts. Easier not to get distracted from what is important, keep your focus, and keep moving.Only sustained movement in one direction can bring tangible results. You have permission to change your goal, rethink, choose another, by all means. Its hard to maintain any momentum if your direction lacks definition. In order to reach big goals, you need time, during which you must continue moving in your chosen direction, not veering off course.Defining your direction as early as possible is the most important decision in sports. But, curiously enough, this is also the most important decision in life in general, but much fewer people realize it.Living on purpose means you live intentionally.Napoleon Hill once said There is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.In order to get what you want, you have to choose one direction and move towards it, constantly improving over a prolonged period of time.Maximum speed and output requires a precise framework.People who have made genuine changes in their lives and managed to attain difficult goals are not stronger, more intelligent or fearless than you. The only difference is the decision to act in the direction of their dreams.A strong sense of purpose fuels your motivation.Successful people have a definite sen se of direction. They have a clear understanding of what success means to them.Everything they do is consistent with their goals. They look forward and decide where they want to be. Their day to day actions helps them move closer to their vision.Once you find your why, you will be more careful and selective about your daily actions. In here book, Brave 50 Everyday Acts of Courage to Thrive in Work, Love and Life, Margie Warrell, writes Knowing your why is an important first step in figuring out how to achieve the goals that excite you and create a life you enjoy living (versus merely surviving).Margie continues Indeed, only when you know your why will you find the courage to take the risks needed to get ahead, stay motivated when the chips are down, and move your life onto an entirely new, more challenging, and more rewarding trajectory.Clarity changes everythingClarity of purpose challenges you to do better and commit to actions that get you closer to the one thing you really want i n life. With clarity, you can pull together resources, ideas and people for a common cause. Without it, there is wasted effort and even chaos.Your direction defines what you do every day.Clarifying not only your purpose but your direction reinforces your ultimate life purpose. You should have a clear understanding of what you want next month, next quarter or next year.Think about it When you feel unclear about a goal, you have difficulty achieving it. And if you dont know why you should do something, you lack committed to taking action.Bud Bilanich, an executive coach says to develop your personal clarity of purpose you need to do three thingsFirst, define what success means to you personally.Second, create a vivid mental image of you as a success. This image should be as vivid as you can you make it.Third, clarify your personal values.Getting clear about what you want is a process of trial and errorTry something. Then ask yourself Do I like this? Yes. No. Get a journal and departure putting down your feelings, thoughts, actions, and behaviors.Use what you write as a way to pinpoint areas you are constantly exploring. Evaluate your results constantly. What actions, thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors are you attracted to the most? The key is to do more of what you enjoy and brings out the very best in you and you will continually clarify what it is that you want to do, be and have in life.Napoleon Hill once said There is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.People who are constantly striving to achieve something meaningful in life crave clarity. Its the only way to reach deeper into yourself to find out what makes you come alive. We all start from somewhere confusing, because you probably like to do a lot of things. But once you define your purpose, you will become unstoppable.Successful people have a definite sense of direction. They have a clear understandi ng of what success means to them.Everything they do is consistent with their goals. They look forward and decide where they want to be. Their day to day actions help them move closer to their vision.Once you find your why, you will be more careful and selective about your daily actions. In the words of Margie Warrell, Author of BraveKnowing your why is an important first step in figuring out how to achieve the goals that excite you and create a life you enjoy living (versus merely surviving). Indeed, only when you know your why will you find the courage to take the risks needed to get ahead, stay motivated when the chips are down, and move your life onto an entirely new, more challenging, and more rewarding trajectory. How to develop meaningful life rulesDeveloping a personal life philosophy can be a deeply rewarding life experience. It can help you understand who you are and make sense of your life.Understand who you are A personal philosophy requires self-awareness, a desire to unde rstand, and the ability to learnCommit to looking for meaning and discerning what makes sense to you.Follow your interests, and improve your basic understanding of life and living it.Keep expanding your thinking. Study other philosophies. Gather philosophies from other people and books. And always remember, a strategy for living is important, but it shouldnt feel like a burden.Philosophy of life (personal life rules) is a collection of meaning from your lifes experiences. Enjoy the process of refining whats important to you in life.As Seneca said As long as you live, keep learning how to live.Closing thoughtsIf youve been following along, youve probably done a lot of critical thinking by now.Hopefully youve reached a new level of self-awareness.I would suggest taking some time in a quiet place to think about where you are headed in life. Are you happy with the direction of your life at the moment? What rules do you want to guide and shape your life? The good news is, its never too late to change direction because you are in control.Reevaluate how youre doing with living according to your core beliefs, principles and philosophies. The unexamined life is not worth living.Socrates said that.Adjust your goals and parameters so theyre up-to-date and in the direction of your dreams.Never be afraid of questioning everything once again. Before you go You can subscribe toPostanly Weekly(my free weekly digest of the best posts about behavior change that affect health, wealth, and productivity). Global Positioning System (GPS) for Pilots

Global Positioning System (GPS) for PilotsGlobal Positioning System (GPS) for PilotsThe global positioning system, orGPSas it is commonly known, is a vital component to modernair navigation, and an invaluable component of the FAAs NextGen program. GPS data allows pilots to obtain precise three-dimensional or four-dimensional drehort data. The GPS system uses triangulation to determine an aircrafts exact location, as well as speed, track, distance to or from checkpoints, and time. History of GPS The United States military first used GPS as a navigation tool in the 1970s. In the 1980s, the U.S. government made GPS available to the general public, free of charge, with one catch A special mode, called Selective Availability, would be enabled to purposefully reduce the accuracy of GPS for public nutzers, reserving only the most accurate version of GPS for the military. In 2000, under the Clinton administration, selective availability was turned off, and the same accuracy that the mili tary had benefited from was made available to the general public. GPS Components The GPS system has three components The space segment, control segment, and user segments. The space component consists of about 31 GPS satellites. The United States Air Force operates these 31 satellites, plus three to four decommissioned satellites that can be reactivated if needed. At any given moment, a extremum of 24 satellitesareoperational in a specially designed orbit, ensuring that at least four satellites are in view at the same time from almost any point on earth. The complete coverage that satellites offer makes the GPS system the most reliable navigation system in modern aviation. The control segment is made up of a series of ground stations used to interpret and relay satellite signals to various receivers. Ground stations include a master control station, an alternate master control station, 12 ground antennas, and 16 monitoring stations. The user segment of the GPS system involves va rious receivers from all different types of industries. National security, agriculture, space, surveying, and mapping are all examples of end users in the GPS system. In aviation, the user is typically the pilot, who views GPS data on display in the cockpit of the aircraft. How It Works GPS satellites orbit about 12,000 miles above us, and complete one orbit every 12 hours. They are solar powered, fly in medium Earth orbit and transmit radio signals to receivers on the ground. Ground stations use the signals to track and monitor satellites, and these stations provide the master control station (MCS) with data. The MCS then provides precise position data to the satellites. The receiver in an aircraft receives time data from the satellites atomic clocks. It compares the time it takes for the signal to go from the satellite to the receiver, and calculates distance based on that very accurate and specific time. GPS receivers use triangulation date from at three satellites to determ ine a precise two-dimensional location. With at least four satellites in view and operational, three-dimensional location data can be obtained. GPS Errors Ionosphere interference the signal from the satellites actually slows down as it passes through the Earths atmosphere. GPS technology accounts for this error by taking an average time, which means the error mucksmuschenstill exists but is limited. Clock error The clock on the GPS receiver might not be as accurate as the atomic clock on the GPS satellite, creating a very slight accuracy problem.Orbital error Orbit calculations can be inaccurate, causing ambiguity in determining the satellites exact location.Position error GPS signals can bounce off of buildings, terrain, and even electrical interference can occur. GPS signals are only available when the receiver can see the satellite, meaning the data will be missing or inaccurate among tall buildings, dense terrain, and underground. Practical Use of GPS GPS is widely used in aviation today as a source ofarea navigation. Almost every aircraft built today come with a GPS unit installed as standard equipment. General aviation, business aviation, and commercial aviation have all found valuable uses for GPS. From basic navigation and position data to airspeed, tracking and airport locations, GPS is a precious tool for aviators. Installed GPS units can be approved for use in IMC and for otherIFR flights.Instrument pilotsfind GPS to be extremely helpful in maintaining situational awareness and flying betriebsmittel approach procedures. Handheld units, while not approved for IFR use, can be a helpful back-up for instrument failures, as well as a valuable tool for maintaining situational awareness in any situation. Pilots flying VFR also use GPS as a navigation tool and a back-up to traditional pilotage and dead reckoning techniques. All pilots can appreciate GPS data in emergency situations, as the database will allow them to search for the nearest airport, calculate time en route, fuel on board, time of sunset and sunrise, and much, much more. Most recently, the FAA has enabledWAASGPS procedures for approaches, introducing a new precision approach to pilots in the form of aLocalizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) approach. This is a precision approach that will enable the national airspace system to become much more efficient and assist in meeting the needs of thenational airspace systemin the future.
